Privacy Teams Expected to Guard AI Future

In most organizations, the privacy team plays an important role in artificial intelligence implementation and governance. Tarun Samtani, data protection officer and privacy program director at International SOS, said privacy principles inherently align with the demand for responsible data use of AI technology.

"If you think about general principles around management of or responsible use of the data, we've been pretty much responsible for a very long time within a privacy department or privacy function. So the focus comes back to privacy itself," Samtani said.

"There are certainly larger organizations which can potentially have the resources for a dedicated AI team, AI governance, AI officer and everything else. But for most of the small-to-medium enterprises, or even into large organizations generally, it would be the privacy team as the first responsible."

Samtani outlined a multifaceted approach for organizations to implement AI, focusing on cross-functional collaboration early in project development and advocating for a structured governance framework to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
