Lockheed Martin Offers New Cyber University

Lockheed Martin's commitment to evolving cybersecurity talent and workforce development initiatives include the implementation of a cyber university that offers formalized training and certification programs to help employees become experts in cybersecurity career tracks, including:

Cyber intelligence - forensics, incident response and fraud prevention specialists to defend and analyze attacks and
Cyber engineering - architects, engineers responsible for building IT systems
Traditional information assurance - security and network professionals, database administrators, risk experts etc

In addition, Lockheed Martin has incorporated secure coding principles into its software development practices.

"The university supports effective talent sourcing and recruitment from top universities in the country and will continue its emphasis on certification, training and mentoring to move cyber professionals along an established career track," says Lee Holcomb, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Lockheed Martin Information Systems & Global Services.

The Lockheed Martin Cyber University, which has been ramping up since late 2008, facilitates training and certification using a blended delivery approach from instructor-led training to professional study groups, lunch-time and weekend seminars, online self-paced study programs and communities of practice.

Current and new employees are able to leverage cybersecurity training and education to include CISSP certification, Security + and other technology specific training. "We are fully compliant with the DoD directive 8570 and want to focus on having our professionals certified even before we get new government contracts to establish excellence and a known standard for high performance," says Holcomb.

The faculty consists of trained internal and external practitioners from a variety of organizations including SANS institute, Cisco and McAfee -- all hands-on experts in their field.

The university will focus both in training new employees, as well as offer programs to veteran practitioners and leaders involved in cybersecurity.

One such program is the engineering leadership development program (ELDP) which is designed to prepare a new graduate to become a future technical security leader at Lockheed Martin. During this three-year program, students will complete rotational assignments with the goal of exposing these professionals to a variety of challenges, concepts and state-of-the-art technologies, as well as involve coaching, mentoring and training by some of the best cybersecurity and business leaders. Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security company that employs about 140,000 people worldwide, principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services.
