Symantec's Tarun Kaura Analyzes Trends, Offers Strategies
Countering Cybercriminals' Innovations

As the cyber threat landscape dramatically changes and cybercriminals become more innovative, organizations in all business sectors need to change their detection and defense strategies, says Tarun Kaura, Symantec's director of solution product management for Asia Pacific and Japan.

"New sophistication and innovation are the nature of the threat landscape, but this year, Symantec has identified seismic shifts in motivation and focus," Kaura says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. "The world saw specific nation-states double down on political manipulation and straight sabotage. Meanwhile, cybercriminals caused unprecedented levels of disruption by focusing their exploits on relatively simple IT tools and cloud services."

As a result, organizations in the region need to have various data loss protection mechanisms in place. "Organizations should have cloud application credentials challenged with two-factor authentication," Kaura saus. To fight ransomware, he suggests a multilayered defense mechanism covering web, email and end points.

In this interview (see audio player link below image), Kaura also discusses how:

  • Attackers are getting more innovative;
  • Email is becoming a weapon of choice for cybercriminals;
  • Targeted attacks are shifting to politically motivated sabotage.

Kaura is director of product management and leads the product solutions team in Asia Pacific and Japan region at Symantec. He works with enterprises to transform their information security and information management strategies.
