IronNet's Bill Swearingen on Empowering Public/Private Alignment
Building a Collective Defense

Beyond mere information sharing, collective defense is a concept that aligns public and private sectors in a unified front against cyber threats. Bill Swearingen of IronNet Cybersecurity defines the concept and how it's being employed today.

Swearingen, a cyberstrategist with IronNet, says there is too much independent effort in cybersecurity defense today, and what we need is more collaboration.

"We're all in this together - we're all researching similar things," Swearingen says. "And we should be sharing it at a machine speed, in a way that can be beneficial for everyone."

In an interview about collective defense, Swearingen discusses:

  • How this differs from information sharing;
  • The tools that power collective defense;
  • Lessons learned from pioneers.

With two decades of hands-on experience in information security, cyber defense and protecting critical infrastructure from advanced cyber threats, Swearingen has the expertise needed to defend against the cyber risks major corporations face today. He has led the security teams for Sprint and CenturyLink, and now is a Cyber Strategist at IronNet. Cybersecurity is his passion, and he has a proven track record of creating, developing, and managing enterprise-class teams providing Incident Response, Digital Forensics, Vulnerability Assessment, Penetration Testing, and Policy Enforcement to large (Fortune 150) corporations.
