Organizations need to learn not just how to prevent data breaches, but also how to more quickly detect them and respond.

Enabling organizations to master these data breach essentials is the focus of the inaugural Data Breach Summit Asia in Mumbai. This Information Security Media Group summit on Oct. 28 at the Holiday Inn Mumbai International Airport arrives as organizations continue to face seemingly nonstop breaches.

"The summit is unique and has an array of learned speakers talking their mind on contemporary topics, so it's very beneficial to the audience and the cybersecurity fraternity at large," says Prashant Mali, president of Cyber Law Consulting, who will be participating in the summit's breach notification panel discussion. "I congratulate the organizers for thinking so out of box."

No industry appears to be immune from the data breach epidemic. Indeed, recent data breach or data exposure victims include everyone from Mumbai-based Meru Cabs and the U.S. Office of Personnel Management to London-based telecommunications provider TalkTalk and Italian surveillance software developer HackingTeam.

Against this backdrop, Indian organizations face all of the usual challenges: too little time, not enough of a security budget and too few information security professionals - especially CISOs. As a result, locking down an organization's sensitive information to prevent fraud and block attacks launched by cybercriminals, hacktivists or malicious insiders continues to be a seemingly impossible challenge.

Must-Have Answers

But help is to hand: ISMG's Data Breach Summit Asia features leading experts from the industry in a day that's designed to deliver must-have actionable information for India's information security professionals (see Hot Sessions: Data Breach Summit Asia). Questions to be answered cover numerous essential topics:

  • Reality: How prevalent are breaches in India?
  • Prevention: How can India improve its breach-prevention practices?
  • Cyber war: Does it pose a danger to organizations?
  • Threat intelligence: How can the promise of information sharing be realized?
  • Detection: How can organizations spot breaches more quickly?
  • Notification: Does India need strong breach-notification laws?
  • Insurance: Is cyber-insurance a "must have" tool in an organization's data breach defense arsenal?
  • Data breach epidemic: What can India learn from the year's top breaches globally?

The summit also features an opening keynote from Brijesh Singh, inspector general of Mumbai for the Indian Police Service. Dr. Gulshan Rai, who heads the Indian government's National Cyber Security Coordination Center, also will join the summit proceedings via a video link to describe India's cybersecurity challenges and how information security practitioners can best address them.

Attendees will also have a chance to network, pose questions to speakers and panel participants and close out the day with an informal cocktail reception.

Above all, however, the summit is designed to give attendees real-world answers to address their organizations' most pressing data breach prevention and response challenges.

"It's a very impressive speaker lineup and the agenda promises to bring to the fore concerns, strategies and the future of the information security domain in India," says Dinesh Bareja, chief operating officer of the OpenSecurity Alliance, founder of India Watch and a participant on the summit's cyber-insurance panel discussion. "I am looking forward to hearing and interacting with leaders from government and enterprise."
