Since Cofiño was appointed to this position in May of 2002, his primary goal has been to protect the brand, mitigate fraud-risk and its impact to client profitability, proactively develop detection/prevention programs, initiatives, and to implement best practices. In this capacity, he has also led the deployment of new technologies, solutions and services across the LAC region provided by Visa, such as Visa Advanced Authorization, Visa Risk Manager and risk consulting services. Cofiño joined the Visa Systems in 1985, where he later managed the Systems Engineering Team - this department was partly responsible for the VisaNet Access Points (VAPs), allowing connections from the banks and processors to Visa. He was also responsible for the Certification Area and other Visa technical products. In 1996, he was appointed Vice President of Special Projects where he successfully managed, among other initiatives, Visa Cash implementations in several countries and the Y2K transition project. In 1999, Cofiño undertook the Y2K Transition Project for the region, managing all business and technical aspects. As part of this effort, he was responsible for the Event Management Center that involved more than 200 staff members. With 31 years of experience at Visa, Cofiño has contributed to the development of a culture of information protection, helping to keep Visa at the forefront of the technological revolution.
